About SAN MARCOS
With a population of about 94.000 citizens, San Marcos ranks as the 89th largest city in California. According to local legend, in 1797, the Spanish discovered the fertile little San Marcos valley after chasing a naughty band of Indians across the landscape. In 1822, the lands about San Marcos were transferred to Mexico after their successful revolt against the King of Spain. In a later conflict (1848), the Governor and his family were killed along with a dozen others, having been blamed for stealing horses by a local Native group.
In retribution, the Mexican militia was called in, working in alliance with a rival native tribe, they killed about 50 of their collective enemies. This story demonstrates the dynamics about how the west was really won. Traitors on both sides played a big role in the outcomes, whether it be Anglo, Chinese, Afro, Hispanic or other dodgy homosapien type.
By the 1880's, San Marcos lands were in full Anglo-American control. Immigrants of this period, primarily German and Dutch, set up a settlement, complete with blacksmith, feed store and weekly newspaper. The city of San Marcos would grow from these humble beginnings.
In 1887, the San Marcos Land Company bought almost all of the city's land, dividing it into many tracts (subdivisions). Soon the town's beautiful hills began to be filed with new homes.
In 1903, in a remarkable event, the people of the town up and moved their town (with houses) a couple miles east to take full advantage of commerce that would surely come from a nearby railroad station. It was a good move. By 1905, the town was happening and had all the high-tech stuff of the time - like mail delivery and telephone service.
The main sustenance in San Marcos in the 19th and early 20th centuries came from a farming with dairy and poultry being the mainstay.
San Marcos experienced an extended period of expansion in 1956 when water was brought in from the Colorado River. The population expanded from a tiny 2,500 in the 50's to 18,000 in 1980 and continued to boom to more than 80,000 in 2010.
